Immediately after roadmapping, when we actually get dived into the project itself, the first phase is that strategic phase. It's project strategy definition. This is where we're going to define and document your purpose, or not your purpose, the purpose of the website. What is the website's explicit purpose and how do you back that purpose up with goals? We like to use the acronym of SMART goals, that's a classic thing rolling around; their Specific, their Measurable and the rest of the acronym I can't remember right now... that's why we write this stuff down.

Purpose, goals, then the user actions. When you've got a visitor on your website what do you actually want them to do? You want them to maybe submit a form or call you or purchase a product. These are the obvious ones. So we we just we go through the process, we define it, we document it, and the last thing, in that is your key performance indicators, Which is a fancy way of saying how are we going to measure whether or not we're achieving the goals, which then achieve the purpose in the long run?

That creates the lens through which we judge every decision throughout the project. So when we're down the line, and we're talking about you know the technical functionality and we're doing that road mapping, or we're looking at the design and we're trying to tweak how the layouts look, the question always comes back to, whatever, whatever we're asking, the right answer is defined by “does this help us achieve those goals and the purpose that we set out at the beginning of the project?” Again this is how we draw that thread of creating a website with purpose on purpose. It's this process of starting strategic and then sticking to that strategy at every step through the process.

And that's project strategy definition. It's usually actually pretty quick. Again, the more complex the project a little more time spent. And even simple projects, we always go through this, so that at the end we've made all the decisions to create a website that will actually do what you need it to do, which we define first.
