Pied billed Grebe | Lobed Feet and More!

Описание к видео Pied billed Grebe | Lobed Feet and More!

Wondering why grebes stick their foot out ? Find out the answer here:    • What is foot shipping?

I was out birding recently and saw a couple of Canada geese, some mallards, and a few American wigeons, which show up this time of year. And then there was something I had not seen before.

It was separate from the others. It popped up out of the water and then quickly disappeared. It was smaller than a mallard, and instead of floating on top of the water, it was partially submerged. The mystery bird was a pied-billed grebe. Within this compact waterbird with almost no tail, there are some fascinating adaptations.

It's designed for diving, and therefore, has feet that are placed far back on the body, which is useful for underwater propulsion.
