Photos from our visits in Egypt: the capital called Cairo, straddling the Nile River, with its Coptic Christian quarters and many mosques, as Cairo’s surnamed the City of a Thousand Minarets, Cairo’s famed Egyptian Museum exhibiting sarcophagi, mummies, and sculptures of pagan deities: Anubis the jackal embalmer, the sacred bull Apis, and the treasures from the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. At short distance is Giza with the 3 massive pyramids of Khufu (the Great Pyramid), Khafre and Menkaure and the Great Sphinx. Go explore other pyramids at Saqqara (Step Pyramid of Djoser) and Dashur (Bent Pyramid, Red Pyramid and Black Pyramid), or Egypt’s old capital Memphis with the Colossus of Ramses II. Plan a full day, leaving early and coming back late, to visit Alexandria, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, surnamed The Pearl of the Mediterranean, with the Citadel of Qaitbay, the new library Bibliotheca Alexandrina, roman remains, and Diocletian Memorial known as Pompey’s Pillar.
