The Legend of Mirza Sahiba: A Tragic Punjabi Love Story
Mirza Sahiba is one of the most celebrated and tragic love stories in Punjabi folklore. It is part of the famous "Punjabi Qisse" (folk tales), alongside Heer Ranjha, Sohni Mahiwal, and Sassi Punnu.
Who Were Mirza and Sahiba?
Mirza: A brave and skilled archer from the Kharal clan of Danabad (near present-day Jaranwala, Faisalabad in Pakistan Punjab).
Sahiba: A beautiful and intelligent girl from the Sial tribe in Khewa (now also in Pakistan Punjab). She was Mirza’s cousin.
They fell in love while growing up together at Sahiba's parents' house, where Mirza studied. Their bond deepened over time, but societal norms and family honor stood in the way.
The Tragic End
Sahiba's family arranged her marriage with another man. Unable to bear this, Sahiba secretly sent a message to Mirza. He rode to her village on his horse Bakki, rescued her from her wedding, and they fled together.
However, while they rested in the forest, Sahiba, fearing bloodshed between Mirza and her brothers, broke all the arrows in his quiver while he slept. Tragically, her brothers found them and, without Mirza's arrows, he couldn't defend himself. He was killed, and Sahiba, in despair, either was killed or killed herself (varying by versions).
