清涼/豪快 袋田の滝と月待の滝　Refreshing/Powerful Fukuroda Falls and Tsukimachi Falls

関東地方の梅雨が開けた2024年7月18日に、清涼を求めて、茨城県奥久慈地方にある袋田の滝と、月待の滝を訪れました。袋田の滝は日本三大名瀑の一つで、高さ120m、幅73mの大きさを誇り、滝の流れが大岩壁を四段に落下することから、別名「四度(よど)の滝」とも呼ばれています。昨夜の豪雨の影響で滝の水は増し、普段と比べて迫力ある滝の姿を見ることができました。月待の滝は、袋田の滝の北西約6kmのところにある、高さ17m、幅12mの滝で、滝の裏の岩盤が大きくえぐられているため、滝の裏側に入り込むことができます。ここでは、古くから二十三夜尊の信仰があり、この滝の内側で、二十三夜の月が出るのを待ち、安産などを祈願するといった信仰が行われていたことから、「月待の滝」と名づけられました。豪快な月待の滝の裏側に入ることにより、すっかり夏の暑さを忘れることが出来ました。

On July 18, 2024, when the rainy season in the Kanto region ended, I visited Fukuroda Falls and Tsukimachi Falls in the Okukuji region of Ibaraki Prefecture in search of a refreshing coolness. Fukuroda Falls is one of the three most famous waterfalls in Japan, boasting a height of 120 m and a width of 73 m. It is also known as "Yodonotaki" because the waterfall falls in four stages down a large rock wall. Due to the heavy rain last night, the water of the waterfall increased, and we were able to see the waterfall more powerful than usual. Tsukimachi Falls is a 17 m high and 12 m wide waterfall located about 6 km northwest of Fukuroda Falls. The rock behind the waterfall is deeply carved, so you can enter the back of the waterfall. There has been a long-standing faith in the Twenty-third Night Son here, and faith such as waiting for the twenty-third night moon to appear inside this waterfall and praying for safe childbirth was carried out, so it was named "Tsukimachi Falls". By going behind the magnificent Tsukimachi Falls, I was able to completely forget the summer heat.
