Gungans were the amphibious native people of the planet Naboo. Tall and acrobatic, they were able to live on land, or underwater, where they built beautiful cities, like Otoh Gunga. They were born as tadpoles and developed lungs that allowed them to hold their breath for great lengths of time. They could spit a substance that had water proofing abilities, as evidenced by Jar Jar Binks saving the life of the human Padme Amidala when her diving helmet cracked. There were two varieties of Gungans: the Otolla and the Ankura. Otolla were the more commonly seen type of Gungan: having eyestalks, billed mouths, and generally warmer skin tones. The Ankura, like Boss Nass had eyes set in their heads and more humanlike mouths. When humans initially colonized Naboo, they came into conflict with the Gungans, who isolated themselves underwater. Tensions remained between the two cultures until the Trade Federation invasion of Naboo ten years before the start of the Clone Wars. The humans and Gungans set aside their differences to fight off the invaders and create peace between their people. When the Clone Wars began, the Gungans did not sit idly by, and joined the fighting on aquatic worlds like Mon Cala. #starwars
