The Philippines has experienced robust growth in its tourism sector over the past few years. From just a little more than 2 million tourist arrivals a decade ago, the number of international tourists visiting the Philippines has doubled. This number is expected to increase further, bolstered by the booming Philippine economy.
Palawan, the country's second-largest province, is renowned as the Philippines' last frontier. It is celebrated for its eco-tourism, pristine islands, and warm hospitality. Located on the northwestern side of Palawan's main island is the hidden gem of the province, the municipality of San Vicente. Now emerging as a significant eco-tourism destination in the country, San Vicente was selected by the Philippine Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority as one of its first flagship Tourism Enterprise Zones in 2013.
Covering a land area of 165,000 hectares, San Vicente is characterized by its rugged terrain, lush forests rich in flora and fauna, and is traversed by 29 rivers. The area is surrounded by pristine, fine white sand beaches, features 17 dive spots, picturesque coves, and is dotted with 21 islets. San Vicente is also home to various indigenous peoples of Palawan, further adding to its rich cultural heritage.
San Vicente offers tourists a myriad of transportation options: by land, by sea, and, as of 2015, by air. The San Vicente Airport, Palawan's new regional airport terminal, has been developed in Barangay New Agutaya. It opened its doors to tourists in 2015, facilitating easier access to this beautiful destination.
The master plan for San Vicente's development promotes a viable and sustainable approach. It is divided into four clusters, with the first cluster having the largest land area, where the country's longest white beach is located. This plan envisions San Vicente's primary development area and includes development guidelines and design standards that respect the area's natural features and terrain. It proposes minimum easements, setbacks, buffer zones, and sound solid waste management plans to mitigate the area's susceptibility to natural disasters.
The vision for San Vicente Tourism Enterprise Zone is to transform it into a modern, environmentally, and socially sustainable tourist destination. This vision emphasizes inclusive and high-end tourism development, responsible commercial development, and the protection of eco-tourism and culturally significant areas.
