IDX Intelligent Dynamics - Waves new FREE plugin || How to use - How it sounds - Mixing Walkthrough

Wave's new plug-in is an efficient dynamic compressor that quickly and automatically identifies and corrects problems in a track. I think the design and workflow of the plugin are excellent. And especially when mixing a song with many tracks, IDX Intelligent Dynamics is probably a great tool that I will be happy to use. I can't yet say how the plugin will perform in a real mixing situation. But in today's test, it proved to be a real timesaver and delivered excellent results!

IDX is a frequency-dependent compressor that automatically identifies and attenuates excess energy in a track. Everyone has recorded tracks that sound great in solo: clean, punchy, and present. But these great tracks are lost when they get to the mix. You’re left with the choice of making the track louder or ducking other tracks—which wrecks the dynamic balance—or aggressively changing the EQ of one or more of the tracks—which alters the instruments’ tone—or using a sidechain to make space—which may work, but still locally affects dynamics.

This track competition is partly due to unnecessary energy that permeates a track. Even the best-sounding tracks may carry excess energy at ever-changing frequencies—a halo of sorts. Played in solo, this energy goes unheard, and the track is good. But when mixed with similar-frequency sounds, this excess can clash and clog the mix. This extra energy serves no useful purpose and takes up some of your dynamic range, so it also reduces apparent loudness. IDX localizes the sections of a track that exhibit excessive energy, and reduces them, all with one threshold control. Since it’s dynamic, it’ continuously listening for these energy buildups and attenuating them to make way for the instrument. With very few controls, you can tame a track and place it nicely in the mix, very quickly.
