Hezbollah Confirms Death of Top Commander Fuad Shukr in Israeli Airstrike

Hezbollah has confirmed the death of top commander Fuad Shukr in an Israeli airstrike on a busy Beirut neighbourhood, which also killed five civilians and injured 74. Israel claims Shukr was behind a recent rocket attack on the Golan Heights. Hezbollah has denied involvement in a recent attack that killed 12. Shukr’s burial is scheduled for August 1, with Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah attending. Hezbollah and Israel have been exchanging fire since the start of war in Gaza. The commander is also blamed for the 1983 Marine barracks bombing that killed 241 Americans. Following the Beirut strike, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant stated on social media that Hezbollah had crossed a red line. Israeli PM Netanyahu lauded the killing of Shukr, claiming it dealt "crushing blows" to enemies. Meanwhile, a separate strike in Tehran killed Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. The UN has called the strikes a "dangerous escalation."
