Custom knife making part 5, Etching makers mark with vinyl stencil
G'day and welcome to part 5 in series on making a custom knife.

Today we are etching on my makers mark using a vinyl label as the stencil, electro etching using a DC power supply and salt water as the etching liquid

This is a simple little knife that is partner for a kitchen knife I made for a client. It will be a bit more of a complex design from the first series that I shared. The customer selected a shape of knife the he liked, taking some basic dimensions from that we go to this video where i draw up the design. Knife makers will often trace designs and re-use them and that is a great way to get started, it makes sure that you are making a blade that will fit the hand and do the job properly. I find that once i have the general idea of what someone is after i will redraw the design to suit my eye as those changes that happen on paper and then on steel make it more personal and more fitting with the way I like my knives styled. I actually designed this a couple of weeks ago and in playing with the idea in my head i know that there will be a couple more changes as it becomes steel.

By all means copy my design, just not my makers mark.
