Grand Canyon University upset Stanford 78-71, handing the Cardinal its first loss of the season.

The Lope’s star Tyon Grant-Foster rolled his ankle in the game, but still lead GCU in rebounds with eight, and added eight points, five assists, three blocks and a steal.

It should come as no surprise that Grant-Foster excelled in the face of adversity.

The 6’ 7” forward played at Indian Hills Community College and Kansas before transferring to DePaul, where he had nine points in the first half of his first game before collapsing in the locker room.

Tyon had to be resuscitated multiple times and his parents were told he had passed.

Grant-Foster collapsed again months later and underwent surgery for scarring around the heart.

After recovering enough to return to basketball, Grant-Foster bonded with GCU coach Bryce Drew, who had an arrhythmia in eighth grade and underwent three surgeries.

In his first season with the Lopes, Tyon averaged 20 points and won WAC Player of the Year. As a seventh-year senior, he’s now an NBA prospect and a graduate student who is working toward his Master's degree in Leadership
