A 150 Year Old Piece Of Bread With A Truly Fascinating Story…

In 1870, France was at war with Prussia and a coalition of German states. The defeat was crushing on the French side and, in September, Paris was surrounded. Then began a long siege for the Parisians, which led to the proclamation of the Paris Commune in March 1871.

Bread, the pillar of French meals, very quickly became a rare commodity and its production and distribution had to be controlled.

Inevitably, wheat flour began running out, so a number of new recipes were used, with the results described by many at the time as being unappetising, a weird colour and impossible to digest.

And so this terrible bread became an emblem of the Siege of Paris, with many besieged citizens keeping pieces as souvenirs.

So, there you have it, a 150 year old piece of bread and a fascinating piece of social history…
