Born in Baghdad in the second century of Islam, Imam Ahmad Bin Hanbal was a pivotal figure in the development of Islamic thought. Dr. Shabir Ally discusses his life, his contributions to Islamic thought, and his founding of the Hanbali school of Islamic jurisprudence, which is known for its strict adherence to the hadith over the use of reason or analogy. Imam Ahmad emphasized the hadith as a primary source of religious authority in contrast with other schools that allowed more room for reason and analogy. Dr. Shabir explains that Imam Ahmad’s approach was to prioritize weak hadiths over human reasoning to preserve the purity of Islamic teachings. Imam Ahmad had a massive compilation of hadiths, which numbers between 28,000 to 30,000. His school became foundational in regions like Saudi Arabia.
