Coastal First Nations leaders are urging Prime Minister Mark Carney to uphold the oil tanker moratorium on B.C.'s North Coast, citing concerns about environmental and cultural impacts. The leaders, representing nine First Nations along the north and central coast of BC and Haida Gwaii, wrote an open letter to Carney, emphasizing their opposition to oil tankers and pipelines.
The moratorium, formalized in Bill C-48, prohibits tankers carrying over 12,500 metric tons of crude oil from stopping or transferring cargo at ports between Vancouver Island's northern tip and the Alaska border. Leaders argue that lifting the ban would put their communities and ecosystems at risk, given the potential for oil spills and damage to whale habitats, wild salmon, and ancient rainforests.
"We're open to discussing projects that will be sustainable and responsible and can strengthen the economy of Canada and British Columbia," said Danielle Shaw, chief councillor of the Wuikinuxv Nation. "But there's strong opposition to oil tankers on this coast because of the impacts it would have for our communities directly"

The meeting between Carney and First Nations leaders comes amid pressure from Alberta and industry to reverse the moratorium. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has pushed for faster approvals for pipeline projects and an exemption at the Port of Prince Rupert.
