Celebrating Miri Piri with Sikh Cycling Club

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

We returned to the Bay area on July 1 to celebrate Miri Piri Divas, commemorating when Guru Hargobind, the sixth Guru of the Sikhs, donned two swords in 1606. He did this to symbolize the combining of miri and piri — temporal and spiritual authority — to declare that Sikhi is to be lived in the real world informed by spiritual awareness. It is through our spiritual ethos that we stand against injustice and raise the voices of the oppressed. The legacy of Guru Hargobind’s declaration defines how we engage in our world even today.

We staged our ride once again at Gurdwara Sahib Milpitas to ride around the South Bay in the San Francisco area. We rode a flat 47 miles that included gravel sections of Baylands Park and took by the headquarters of major tech companies juxtaposed with panoramic vistas of the Bay.
