Many horses have a defensive reaction to the rider picking up the reins. Sometimes it’s from their past experiences, sometimes it’s their go-to evasion because of their conformation or temperament. No matter the cause, we have to bridge that trust gap, as acceptance of the bit leads to connection and throughness, which helps the horse carry us in a healthier way.

This week JJ shows us how she warms up at the walk with a new horse in her barn who defensively throws his head and neck up when the rider picks up the reins. And while he has improved significantly in a short period of time, JJ reminds us that with horses, it takes as long as it takes; we must remain patient, calm, and have a clear plan, no matter HOW long it takes!
