The youngest member of the Macedonian Dynasty, Theodora was forced to watch her reproductive years pass by, only to inherit a succession crisis as her family had no more heirs. Theodora had a chance at power in 1028, but declined due to her unwillingness to wed Romanus Argyrus. After that, she may or may not have plotted with a couple of different generals to overthrow her sister, Zoe. When Zoe was betrayed by Michael V, Theodora came back to power by popular demand. After a brief period of co-rule, she then settled in for some years of leisure, watching her latest brother-in-law Constantine IX bungle. When Constantine IX perished, she was finally able to exercise power on her own and impressed the public by performing her duties very capably. However, Theodora too failed to solve the problem of how to peacefully perpetuate a dynasty with no more living members.
