We always seem to know what's good for us and be happy about it. We seem also to know what is bad for us, and it makes us feel miserable. Yet we tend to forget that often things we deemed good have turned out to be actually bad, or things we deemed bad have turned out to be actually good. At the end of the day, we ought to learn that "There is nothing (intrinsically) good or bad, but thinking makes it so" to use Shakespeare's eternal words.

In this speech, Alan Watts expounds on the Taoist concept of not interfering with nature, as the complexity of events is beyond our verbal interpretations. This central approach of Taoism consists in letting events unfold without judgment, acknowledging that not only our understanding is limited, but also that going with the tide of life without resistance and accepting uncertainty as a part of it is the ultimate way of consciousness.
