Video taken April 24, 2021 on Giant Gap, North Fork American. Probably about 700 CFS inflow to Lake Clementine; very low.
This is Dominator, a class IV+/V- rapid (depending on flow.)
I should've turned right at charged at 32 seconds here and tried to miss the toaster slot. I thought by going left there that we'd easier charge across the face of the drop and more easily miss it.
But the back-left of the boat caught too much rock and began to spin us left.
Might not look like it, but it felt as though we were screwed. Those split seconds hanging at the top seemed long... We were very close to dropping into it, which is a near-sure flip at the bottom of the rapid. (I've seen it several times.)
Still, then canyon is so beautiful and worth running. There's a pretty grueling 1.6 mile hike down into Euchre Bar, then about 9 miles of great whitewater, a long, largely flat stretch, and one last rapid before take-out at 14.5 miles.
