With vacancies at a record high, employers struggling to recruit and productivity stagnating, the UK’s skills shortfalls should be top of everyone’s agenda. Our research has found that concerningly, employer training has fallen in the last decade and people with the lowest qualifications are most likely to lose out. Meanwhile, apprenticeships for young people and at entry level have fallen sharply following reforms in 2017. How can employers support employees to develop their skills, meet labour market needs and develop a high pay, high skills economy?

Given the Government’s ambition to encourage greater levels of employer investment in employee training, both for apprentices and for employees more generally, this event will explore the need for a long-term plan for skills and growth, and ways of incentivising learning at work for people at all skills levels. Five years on from the introduction of the apprenticeship levy, we will look at what’s working well and what needs to change.
