Why does dry hair become itchy?
Dry hair causes itchiness and flakes that lead to dandruff. Dryness may also lead to excess sebum production to compensate the dryness, leading to an oily scalp with dry ends.

What shampoo should dry hair use?
In such cases, a shampoo with mild detergent properties should be used. A mild shampoo ensures that the hair is not stripped of the remaining natural oils on the scalp. Therefore, shampoos containing strong detergents should be avoided.

How did the hair become dry?
Healthy hair becomes dry when the cuticle is damaged. The cuticle is the outer layer of hair that contains protein bonds that keep the hair smooth, silky and frizz-free. When treatments like straightening and colouring are done at saloons, the cuticle gets damaged and becomes dry. The dryness leads to the hair seeming brittle and damaged and can cause breakage or split ends.

How often should I wash my hair?
Dry hair should be rinsed 2 to 3 times a week using only a mild shampoo followed by an intense moisturizing conditioner.

Are there any ingredients that can harm dry hair?
Sulphates, parabens, minerals, phthalates and other chemicals can further dry the hair. Thus, it is better to consult a dermatologist to recommend a shampoo/conditioner or use one free of all of the above. Styling products like gel, pomade and hair spray should also be avoided because they can make the hair dry.

Apart from shampoo and conditioner, a silicone or keratin serum can be used to coat the hair and help the damaged cuticle. This can prevent the hair from breaking here and there.
