Serena Khaplu Palace: A magnificent piece of Baltistan's heritage restored by AKCSP [4K] Ultra HD

Khaplu Palace, built in the 1840s by Raja Yabgo is locally known as Yabgo Khar, meaning "the fort on the roof" is an old fort and palace located in Khaplu, in Ganche District of Gilgit-Baltistan region of northern Pakistan.

The Palace has been brought back to life using a strategy of adaptive re-use and restoration by the Aga Khan Cultural Service Pakistan (AKCSP), an institution of the Aga Khan Development Network.
Serena Khaplu Palace is situated on the upper side of Khaplu Town; a town which characterizes the particularly rich and diverse cultural and architectural heritage of Baltistan with influences from both Tibet and Kashmir.

In olden days, Khaplu was the gateway for caravans and traders en router Nubra Ladakh through Shyok trail and to Yarqand via Saltoroo La. Beside these historic tracks, Khaplu is the base camp for most spectacular villages, mountains like Mashebrum (7,821 m) and the majestic Siachen glacier the world’s highest and second longest glacial strip.

Khaplu is home to approximately 90,000 people, whose history, lifestyle, customs and cultural heritage has its roots in early Tibetan Buddhist origins. The heritage is still evident in much of the local traditions, architecture and language of the area.

Lastly, the palace is 3 hours (114 km) drive from Skardu Airport.
