Benedicta Nthoki Muinde, a mother of three found herself working as a bar attendant at the tender age of 16 and in an abusive marriage. The relationship ended in a bitter divorce after she realised the man he was in love with was not only abusive but was already married to another woman. Together with her son, Benedicta found herself in the streets of Nairobi and was forced to go back to her rural home in Machakos but things were not as rosy, her father passed away and her mum got kicked out of their matrimonial home for only giving birth to only five girls.

Soon after Benedicta and her son made their way back to Nairobi she got married, again and was blessed with a daughter. Two years into the new marriage, hell broke loose, her husband lost his job and they survived on manual jobs and was unable to pay rent, he would hide under the bed when the landlord came calling for rent arrears.

As if fate would have it, Benedicta conceived again but he upped and left after accusing her of cheating when she was diagnosed with a UTI infection. She struggled with the pregnancy, often getting help from neighbors and well wishers when she was not able to fend for herself.

Her 10-year-old son would hawk scrap metals to get food for her pregnant mum and sister. On the due date, she was all alone in the house with her son and daughter. She fell unconscious from the pain and only heard her son cry and scream that the baby would will die. Regaining consciousness, she asked her son to help her cut off the umbilical cord with a kitchen knife as he wrapped up the baby with a bed sheet placing him on the bed before going to ask for help.

Benedicta says her son is her biggest blessing that God ever gave her, the one who has been with her through the toughest part in her life, now that her sisters have abandoned her too.It pains her to see that the very people she thought would hold her hand when she needed them most turned their backs on her. She has been bedridden for sometime now and is facing eviction from her sister's rented house.
