With its two hundred thousand inhabitants, Rocinha on the
outskirts of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, is one of the biggest
shanty towns in Latin America. Just like many others, it has had
more than its fair share of poverty and violence. For the
people of Rocinha, a mixture of impoverished migrants from the
north-east of Brazil, construction workers, criminals and
housemaids, the beautiful city of Rio De Janeiro can only be
admired from a distance...something the people can see from
their windows, but not fully participate in, nor enjoy. Yet for
some of the women of the shanty town, or favela, life is
changing. The collective, Coopa Rocca has been designing and
producing clothes which have been hitting the headlines in the
international fashion world. And it's the women of Rocinha who
are producing the clothes.
