Can you write a program which counts from 0 to 100 without using loops, recursion, or manual brute force? I gave it a try with self modifying code, aka polymorphic programs. These are special programs which change their underlying source code every time they are run (not to be confused with polymorphism). I give a run down of a bare bones polymorphic app written in C++, followed by some interesting potential applications with evolutionary programming and AI. In terms of the philosophy of computing and set theory, this is also pretty fascinating -- how can something spawn a new copy of itself without increasing its own size to do so? It brushes up against Russels Paradox.

The next interesting idea would be to embed a compiler into source code as a binary data stream so that a runtime application could generate its own compiler. Ideally, a program would become entirely self contained and have all the ingredients necessary to reproduce new versions of itself.
