The Living Legacy of Les Paul -

In 2002... The Gibson Guitar Company celebrated fifty years of the Les Paul guitar by giving this beautiful White Les Paul Custom guitar as a very special commemorative gift to Les Paul onstage one Monday night at The Iridium Club in New York City. Well... Les was overjoyed and very moved by the gesture as was everyone in attendance that night back in 2002... The very first Les Paul guitar was made by Gibson way back in 1952... and 50 years later the guitar and the iconic brand was going strong. This solid body electric guitar changed the music forever! Les was so moved and taken with this guitar that he chose it specifically to grace the cover of his one and only autobiography, called “Les Paul In His Own Words”. He chose this 50th Anniversary White Custom from amongst literally hundreds of guitars Les had all over his home and in his vast collection. Les was well known for virtually destroying most guitars he played in some mad race to test out an idea or experiment with one thing or another… but he had so much respect for this guitar and cherished what it meant for his legacy that he dared not touch it. He even had the artist rep for Gibson take it back to the Custom Shop and re-fret it to his specific liking, so that he could actually play it. He never would do that unless he intended to actually play it… which he did quite regularly in his later years. Les thought so much of this White Custom that he also used it for the now famous photo shoot with famed photographer Gene Martin. Les Paul fans will most likely remember the great shot of Les sticking out his tongue while holding this guitar… as an homage and tribute to the famous Albert Einstein… who famously did the same thing. Gene Martin had that idea because he thought that Les was a genius too!

Les Paul’s son, Gene Paul said… “There are two historical ‘bookends’ in my father’s life… the first ‘Number One’ 1952 Gold Top, and his 50th Anniversary White Custom. This White Custom Les Paul guitar signifies 50 years of Dad working with Gibson, and 50 years of Gibson making the Les Paul guitar… which changed the musical world as we know it! None of us expected it to last this long!”

This 50th Anniversary White Custom Les Paul guitar was made especially for Mister Les Paul by the good folks at the Gibson Custom Shop as a celebration of 50 years of the Les Paul guitar. To say that this instrument is a major piece of history is an understatement at least… it represents Rock and Roll as we know it… it represents every great artist and legendary Les Paul player throughout history… it represents 50 years of Les Paul working directly with Gibson… and it is the tangible proof of Mister Les Paul’s legacy and his permanent footprint on music and our collective culture...

A priceless heirloom indeed!
