I stayed at the Hotel Am Schloss in Schwerin in February 2019. Two of us stayed for 4 nights in a double room for 68 Euro per night on a bed and breakfast basis. This was a good value for money deal.
The hotel is located a 15 minute walk or a 5 minute tram ride from Schwerin Hauptbahnhof, or a 5 minute walk from Schwerin Mitte Railway Station.
The hotel is very traditional, and is quite decent in size and facilities, although during our stay, we found that the reception was only open during limited hours, and there was no bar service, although there was a nice looking bar and lounge behind reception.
Check-in was quite painless although the receptionist spoke only limited English, but enough with my limited German for us to communicate effectively enough.
We were shown to our room which was in a separate building across a cobbled courtyard. Whilst the cobbles were very traditional, they are not very practical or accessible. Upon entering our building there was no lift or elevator, but fortunately our room (94) was only up two short flights of stairs. Do keep this in mind when booking if you have mobility issues. The main hotel building does have an elevator.
The bedroom was large with two single beds pushed together to make a super king-sized double. The room had a separate toilet room with sink, and a separate shower room, also with sink. This was very good. The shower was a small cubicle, and was a very fine spray, but it did the trick. There was also a hairdryer.
The bedroom had a double wardrobe, bedside shelves, a dressing table / desk with drawers and a chair. There were two very powerful radiators, which kept the room warm at all times. It was a good quality traditional bedroom, although do note if you are staying here in summer that it did not have air-conditioning, so you would need windows open, which may cause noise / exhaust fume / cigarette smoke smells from the courtyard.
The breakfast buffet was traditional German and very good quality too, there were some really tasty items including the herring salad and delicious warm bread rolls.
The staff in the hotel were mostly very good and friendly, giving good customer service. The only 'problem' staff were the cleaners. They had an annoying habit of entering the room when I was in bed (there were no 'Do Not Disturb' signs for the door handle). The cleaners also neglected to leave bath towels for two consecutive days, which was annoying. I did mention this on the second day to the breakfast staff, and they did immediately rectify this situation, which was very good of them.
What was most annoying for me personally was that the cleaners attempted unsuccessfully to evict us from our room on the last day, 30 minutes before the check-out time of 11:00. They had no right to do this, and should not have even attempted to enter the room before 11:00. I think that hotel management might need to have a quiet word with them about this, and i'm hoping they will do just that after reading this.
I was in Schwerin to attend a wedding at Schwerin Castle, and for that purpose, this hotel was conveniently close, however if I were to visit Schwerin again, I would probably explore other accommodation options, noting that there are quite a few hotels and pensiones in the city. I must stress that this was not a bad hotel, but I think that there may be alternatives in Schwerin that I would enjoy more.
