In 1975, Mexico hosted the First World Conference on Women, convened by the United Nations under the theme “Equality, Development and Peace,” which launched the United Nations Decade for Women. Since then, key milestones have marked the advancement of women’s rights worldwide: the adoption of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) in 1979, and the creation of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean, which held its first session in Havana in 1977. In 2010, another step forward was taken with the establishment of UN Women. Within the framework of the Sixteenth Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean, held in the same venue as the 1975 Conference, in Tlatelolco, this video was presented in the segment “Memory and Future” to recall how, fifty years ago, the First World Conference on Women inaugurated a new era in multilateralism. The memory of this milestone inspires a future that prioritizes the sustainability of life and the care of people and the planet. The member States of ECLAC participating in the Sixteenth Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean adopted the Tlatelolco Commitment, which establishes a Decade of Action (2025–2035) in Latin America and the Caribbean to accelerate the achievement of substantive gender equality and the care society.
