In early July 2023, thanks to geographical proximity, some friends who wanted to do some exploring and some 10-year old beta from the internet, we were able to get out and paddle/explore a couple of small gorges on Tarryall Creek.

With flows dropping across the state, I noticed 80 cfs still coming out of Tarryall Reservoir, and knowing from the aforementioned beta that it may go at ELF levels, I put the call out to the group and we got to work.

We first put on at Spruce Grove CG, and paddled the 1/2 mile gorge just below it. Then, we hiked our boats to the road, ran up and grabbed vehicles, and then took a Pike NF Road (I think 204) down to the head of the second box canyon. Gearing up, we launched above this gorge.

Inside we found a number of large cascades that were essentially unrunnable, a few drops that had some wood issues, and a surprising number of decent small granite rapids. None of the portages were hard, and after completing the paddle we hiked back around the granite dome that makes this second gorge to our cars.

Our total time from first pull up to driving away was around 5 hours, and we paddled in total around 1.5 miles. HUGE thanks to Braden, Jack and Kyle for rallying out to meet for this adventure, and an even bigger thanks to Kyle for sharing his footage with me!
