NYU Gallatin | The Gallatin Galleries | Waste_World: A Green-Frastructure Installation

As a coffee-loving city that drinks seven times more coffee than any other, NYC is at the epicenter of a non-compostable coffee cup eco-dilemma. Students from Louise Harpman’s "Architecture and Urban Design LAB" class have created Waste_World, a green-frastructure installation made up of compostable Think Coffee cups. The installation is a response to the waste journey of non-compostable cups, an overwhelming number of which live in our trash streams, and seeks to shed light on the ways compostable and life-sustaining materials can help change NYC’s green footprint. Through dialogue, action, and education about our participation in the trash stream and the need for a more robust composting infrastructure in NYC, Gallatin students show ways we can work collectively to make smart environmental decisions.

Presented at NYU Gallatin in The Gallatin Galleries in spring 2017, now permanently installed at the NYU Provost's Office.

About the Gallatin Galleries: The Gallatin Galleries is an exhibition space that serves Gallatin students, alumni, faculty, and the broader community through shows that engage in conversations taking place in the arts as well as in the academic, social, and political spheres. The Gallery works to expand the dialogue of ideas with the shows it hosts and invites students, faculty, and the broader public to see the space as a site of exploration of ideas, practices, and creative forms.
