Acid Rain:
Acid rain or acid deposition occurs when sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) react in the atmosphere with H2O, O2 and other chemicals to form various acidic compounds such as HNO3 and H2SO4.
The acids fall to the ground from the atmosphere in wet or dry forms.
This can include rain, snow, fog, hail or even dust.
FORMS OF ACID DEPOSITION:
Acids can be deposited in two ways,
1. Wet deposition
2. Dry deposition.
Wet Deposition:
When acidic materials falls from the atmosphere to the ground in wet form (rain, snow, sleet, hail or fog) then it's called Wet Deposition.
Dry Deposition:
When acids deposit on the earth's surface in a dry form such as dust or gases, then it's called Dry Deposition.
Normal Rain water is weakly acidic-WHY?
This is because it reacts with carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere and forms mildly acidic carbonic acid (H2CO3) before it becomes rain.
H2O (l) + CO2 (g) → H2CO3(aq)

Acid rain formation:
In Acid rain, Sulfur dioxide (SO2) undergo oxidation and then react with water resulting in the formation of sulfuric acid (H2SO4)
2SO2 (g) +O2 (g) → 2SO3 (g)
SO3 (g) + H2O (l) → H2SO4 (aq)

Effect of Acid Rain:
1. Acid in the air react with calcium carbonate (CaCO3) of marble and makes yellow in color.
CaCO3 + H2SO4 → CaSO4 + H2O + CO2
2. It damages the statues, monuments and tombstone made up of stones and metals.
3. Acid rain decrease the pH level of water. Low pH level kill fishes, their eggs and fish food organisms.
4. Acid rain also damages high-altitude forests. Moreover, it limiting the soil of essential nutrients available to them.
