Tether, or USDT, maintains its stable 1:1 value with the U.S. dollar through a simple but carefully controlled system of minting and redemption. When institutions or major clients send U.S. dollars to Tether Limited, the company mints an equivalent amount of USDT tokens — for example, a $1 million deposit creates 1 million USDT. These tokens enter circulation and can be traded across crypto markets. When someone wants to convert their USDT back into dollars, the process reverses — they return the tokens to Tether Limited, which burns them (permanently removes them from circulation) and releases the equivalent cash value. This ensures the supply of USDT always matches the total reserves backing it. While direct minting and redemption are typically reserved for large institutions due to compliance and capital requirements, regular users trade USDT on exchanges like Binance or Coinbase, where liquidity is maintained by market participants who do interact with Tether directly. The entire system depends on this mint-and-burn balance — if new tokens were issued without matching reserves, the peg would collapse. That’s why transparency about reserves remains critical. In essence, USDT is minted when dollars flow in, and burned when they flow out, keeping its value locked at one dollar per token and ensuring global traders can move liquidity instantly across the crypto economy.
