Duct systems in unconditioned spaces like attics are notoriously problematic. When duct systems leak air in unconditioned spaces like attics, crawl spaces, garages, etc, that conditioned air is lost completely from the home. This requires air conditioners and furnaces to run longer in order to bring the house to temperature, which drives up energy costs. Duct leakage also causes comfort problems in homes. When that hot or cold air is lost to an attic or crawl space, rather than going to a bedroom or living room, the result is rooms that are hotter or colder than they should be, depending on the season. Flexible ducts tend to be be fairly tight themselves, but where they leak is where flexible ducts connect to the trunk line and register boots. And this is the case here as you'll see.

In this video we look at a really bad, leaky duct system that's in an attic and we show the process of changing out the old leaky take-offs for new air tight ones, and also changing out the old poorly insulated flexible duct for new, highly insulated R-8 rated flexible ducts. We also show the proper techniques for attaching the take-off's to the trunk line, making sure they're sealed, attaching flexible duct to take-offs / collars and making sure they they are permanently sealed and attached, etc.

The finished result is a duct system that is far tighter than before we started, resulting in massively improved energy efficiency for this home and comfort for this homeowner!
