Your seven-year-old daughter has been brought to the Emergency Department with gastroenteritis and dehydration. The nurse has come to insert a cannula so fluids can be administered intravenously. You have some questions about the procedure.
TASK
When asked, say you don't understand why your daughter can't just have lots of drinks instead of having intravenous fluids.
Say the reason for the cannula is clear now, but you are concerned that having the cannula inserted will be painful.
Say your daughter hates injections so you know she's going to panic when she sees the needle.
• Say you are relieved to hear that there are things that can be done to help your daughter stay calm. When asked, say that your daughter hasn't been in hospital overnight before.
Say it's good that you can stay with your daughter after she has been admitted. Agree to your daughter having the cannula inserted.

NURSE
Your patient is a seven-year-old girl who has been brought to the Emergency Department with gastroenteritis and dehydration. You are about to insert a cannula so fluids can be administered intravenously. The child's parent has some questions about the procedure.
TASK
Confirm reason for visit (insertion of cannula, administration of fluids). Find out if parent has any questions.
Explain reason for IV fluids (e.g., unable to tolerate fluids orally, faster/more effective rehydration: direct to bloodstream, etc.).
Reassure parent about procedure (application of numbing cream, short procedure, minimal pain/discomfort once in place, etc.). Explain dressing will keep cannula in place.
Suggest strategies for managing his/her daughter's panic (e.g., explanation of steps, deep breathing, distraction during procedure, etc.). Outline treatment (e.g., first dose of intravenous fluids, re-assessment after four hours, possibility of further fluids, etc.). Explain possibility of overnight stay in hospital. Find out if his/her daughter has been in hospital before.
• Explain process if child is admitted (transfer to ward, parent can stay, etc.). Establish parent's consent for cannula insertion/IV fluids.
