Jean Prouvé | Total Filling Station / Station Service Total (1969) — Animatic

In 1969 energy provider Total began implementing a mass-production policy for its gas stations: the big ones on France’s freeways and the smaller roadside units. For this the company called in Jean Prouvé, who had already amply demonstrated his skills in the field of prefabrication.
The buildings used a radiating central-plan structure of galvanized steel sheet, with a central cylinder and perimeter poles. The facade comprised thirteen polyester and glass panels. The diversity of building plots led to a choice of near-cylindrical buildings on one or two levels, with or without accommodation.
As a manifesto for prefabricated architecture, this structure—light and rapidly, easily assembled—was rebuilt as a demonstration piece outside the architecture school in Nancy in 2000.

A partir de 1969, l’entreprise énergétique Total développe une politique d’aménagements industrialisés de ses stations essence, qu’il s’agisse de ses grandes stations d’autoroute ou de ses stations routières. Dans ce cadre, le groupe fait appel à Jean Prouvé qui a déjà su largement démontrer son savoir faire en matière d’architectures préfabriquées.
Le bâtiment est élaboré sur un plan centré à structure rayonnante en tôle galvanisée reposant sur un fût central et des poteaux périphériques. La façade quant à elle se compose de treize panneaux en polyester et verre. La variété des terrains conduit en effet au choix de bâtiments quasi-cylindriques à un ou deux niveaux, avec ou sans logements.
Manifeste de l’architecture préfabriquée, cette architecture légère faite par assemblage simple et rapide a été remontée à titre pédagogique en 2000 devant l’école d’architecture de Nancy.
