Muslims throughout the world began celebrating the Holy Month of Ramadan on December 30. It is one of the holiest Muslim festivals of the year and is marked by strict fasting during daylight hours. During Ramadan Muslims are forbidden to eat or drink (or have sex) between dawn and dusk.
India has the largest Islamic community in the world and Muslims here are free to practice their religion, and generally without fear of prejudice from the Hindu majority. The daily ritual begins before dawn, when Muslims arise to eat while it is still dark. During the day, they visit local markets to buy special sweets and foods for when the fast is broken.
Ramadan in India is not just a religious celebration, it is a social and cultural event enjoyed by Muslims and Hindus. Many businesses and government organisations take part in the tradition, with even non-muslim employees observing the fast.
