STORYLINE:
Holidaymakers and local residents in the Thai resort island of Phuket found different ways to celebrate New Year and commemorate those lost in the Asian tsunami disaster.
As some let off the traditional fireworks, others gathered for a candlelight vigil to remember the dead and missing.
Others took to the resort''s bars and streets to spend the evening enjoying what festivities there were on offer.
On Friday, Thailand''s Interior Minister said three-and-a-half-thousand bodies had been recovered from the Phi Phi island resort, north of the internationally popular Phuket island.
Thai forensic scientists have said they have no idea how long it will take to identify all the dead.
Health experts, concerned about the threat of disease, have asked people to leave the island immediately, but some people have decided to stay.
