Here are some rules and tips for a Griha Pravesh, or housewarming, ceremony:
Select an auspicious date
Choose a day and time that is considered auspicious according to astrology or Vastu Shastra.

Prepare the house
Clean the house to remove negativity and decorate the entrance with a rangoli, flowers, and mango leaves.

Break items to symbolize removing obstacles
Break an ash gourd and place it at the entrance, and break a coconut at the doorway.

Perform the puja
At the entrance, perform aarti with camphor, incense sticks, and a ghee diya while chanting mantras.

Enter the house with the right foot
The husband and wife should enter the house together, with the man putting his right foot first and the woman putting her left foot first.

Set up the Kalash
Place the Kalash in the northeast corner of the temple while chanting mantras of Lord Ganesha.

Decorate with idols
Face all the idols in the house east. Decorate the idols and the puja thali with vermilion, also known as kumkum.

Invite guests
Invite family, friends, and neighbors to the ceremony.

Give gifts
After the ceremony, give gifts such as a silver coin, an idol, or boxes of sweets to guests.

Offer food and gifts to the priest
After the ceremony, offer food items and gifts to the priest.

Stay in the house
At least one person should stay in the house for three days after the ceremony.

Avoid certain months
In Hinduism, the months of आषाढ़, श्रावण, भाद्रपद, अश्विन, and पौष are not considered good for a Griha Pravesh.

Perform a Havan or Yagna
For a rented house, instead of a elaborate puja, a Havan or Yagna can be performed.
