There are loads of events happening in cities around the globe every night of the week where folks who don’t know each other will down beers and swap business cards. And some of those folks will make the occasional valuable connection. Networking can take numerous forms and can be done on your own terms. In fact, it should be done on your own terms, or it won’t be rewarding or effective.

Bullet-Proof Way to Kick Off Conversations:

Market research

There are plenty of benefits to using this opener, such as learning from each other, discovering common interests, articulating what you offer and your value. Start with, “Hello, sorry to interrupt, but over the last few weeks I’ve been asking everyone I meet this one question…” This lead is very hard to walk away from. It immediately builds intrigue and it signals to the person/people you are speaking with that an interesting conversation is coming.

Example: “What’s your definition of success?”, “What’s the greatest lesson you’ve learned from one of your mentors?” or "What difference in the world do you want to make?"

Compliment + Guess

This framing is super effective not only because most people love compliments but also because these questions allow you to learn more about what the other person does and to do so in a fun way.

Example: “Sorry to bother you, but I couldn’t help noticing how great you are with people. Are you also in sales?”

Oldies but goodies

These questions immediately open the door for people to talk about their hobbies, interests, side-projects and families. This makes it easy to see if you share common interests with them.

Example: “What advice would you give yourself if you could rewind the clock to when you were just starting out?”, “If you could start a business today, what would it be?” or “What’s the best advice you were ever given?”

Visiting a new city for an event

This approach is simple yet effective. Nine times out of ten either you or the people you’re networking with someone who is traveling. Why not exploit this situation and use it to your advantage when introducing yourself?

Example: “I’ve never been to [insert city name] before. Do you have any recommendations for places to see off the beaten path?”, “Do you have a trick to get rid of jet-lag?”

The ultimate go-to conversation starter

This one comes with a caveat: you have to do your homework before the event. Fortunately, social media makes this easy.

Example: “I believe we have a mutual friend in...”
