Here’s another vessel lots of you have been asking to see the finished result of, this time it’s the turn of this crimson red jar, a vessel made using PF-690, an unbelievably vibrant stoneware that stains everything it touches. Together with the clay body being red, I’ve also wedged some bronze into the clay that creates crimson specks once reduction fired, together with also coating the pot in a metallic, crimson glaze.

So, picking up where I left off, the jar is bisque fired to 1000ºC, waxed, glazed, thinly I might add, as I really wanted the shape of the pot to come through, additionally this glaze works best in a watery layer, too thick and the red tone becomes overwhelming.

I then place five small disks of wadding underneath the lid, a mixture I make in-house from 50% kaolin and 50% coarse alumina hydrate. I roll it out, cut it into tiny bits and tack it onto the waxed surface, they stick really well, (please don’t lick them, yes that’s how people often apply wadding and digesting alumina is NOT a good idea).

The lid is wedged onto the body in such a way that neither component is touching, instead it’s simply the waddings that separate them. Into the gas kiln it goes, its reduction fired to cone ten, (1290ºC), and a few days later its unpacked.

As clay shrinks it does so around the particles of grog the body contains, thus making it coarse again, so, to deal with this I use valve lapping paste on the underside of the lid to grind it smooth once again. It’s washed off, left to dry and finally the jar is complete… let me know what you think!
