The latest phase of Police Scotland’s campaign to prevent doorstep crime and target bogus callers has launched.

Our colleagues in Highland & Islands Police Division spoke to Mrs Muriel Neill (87) from Inverness about her experience when a bogus trader appear on her doorstep.

Operation Monarda raises awareness of a crime which impacts on the most vulnerable members of the community and often leaves victims too embarrassed to go to the police, fearing a loss of independence and facing financial uncertainty in the future.

Doorstep crime occurs across Scotland, in every policing division, with more than 1000 incidents and 262 bogus caller crimes recorded between 1 February 2015 and 31 July 2015. Approximately £238,300 was taken from victims during this time – which is around £100,000 lower than during the previous reporting period.

Look out for your elderly friends, family and neighbours and think about the impact this crime can have.
