Afghanistan Earthquake: A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan early Monday, shaking the region and triggering multiple aftershocks. Tremors were felt as far as Pakistan. The National Centre for Seismology reported the main quake at a depth of 160 km, with aftershocks measuring 4.3, 4.7, and 5.0 magnitudes. At least 15 people were injured in Nangarhar and taken to hospitals. Experts warn shallow and intermediate quakes are more dangerous, with stronger shaking and higher risks of damage. Afghanistan, lying on active fault lines between the Indian and Eurasian plates, faces frequent, sometimes deadly seismic events. Dhaka’s greatest risk doesn’t only come from seismic tremors, but from its fragile infrastructure and unplanned urbanization. Narrow streets, weakly built structures, and extreme population density could turn even a moderate quake into a humanitarian disaster.
In this video, we explore:
Why Dhaka’s building code violations and congested neighborhoods increase earthquake risks.
The alarming survey results showing how thousands of buildings could collapse.

Why Dhaka’s building code violations and congested neighborhoods increase earthquake risks. The alarming survey results showing how thousands of buildings could collapse. The debate among experts on whether a major quake is imminent.
Why, despite differing opinions, everyone agrees that Dhaka’s lack of preparedness is the real danger. Earthquakes may be natural, but devastation is not inevitable. Strict enforcement of building codes, stronger emergency response capacity, and widespread public awareness can save lives.
