To determine if thyroid hormone levels have increased, a blood test is typically ordered to measure the levels of thyroid hormones in the body.

The two main thyroid hormones that are typically measured in a blood test are:
Thyroxine (T4): This is the main hormone produced by the thyroid gland. An increase in T4 levels can indicate hyperthyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone.
Triiodothyronine (T3): This hormone is produced in smaller amounts by the thyroid gland and is more biologically active than T4. An increase in T3 levels can also indicate hyperthyroidism.
In addition to these two hormones, the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level may also be measured. TSH is produced by the pituitary gland and stimulates the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones. If thyroid hormone levels are low, the pituitary gland will produce more TSH to try to stimulate the thyroid gland to produce more hormones. Conversely, if thyroid hormone levels are high, the pituitary gland will produce less TSH.

In cases of hyperthyroidism, TSH levels are typically low, while T4 and/or T3 levels are high. Your healthcare provider will interpret the results of your blood test and discuss any treatment options if necessary.
