An 18-year-old Lorain City Schools student who was found with a fatal gunshot wound to the head last week was accidentally shot by a "juvenile family member," police announced Friday.

Police found Isaac Brocco-Rivera with fatal gunshot wound to the head at Lakeview Park North on Oct. 18. Lorain police officers responded to the park, located at 1700 West Erie Avenue, at 6:44 p.m. after receiving a report that a shooting had just occurred.

Officials say police found a vehicle parked near the west end of the lot, with the 18-year-old victim unresponsive inside with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. Officers rendered first aid and called EMS personnel to transport Brocco-Rivera to a Lorain hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

"Through exhaustive investigative efforts, detectives have learned that a juvenile family member who was present with Mr. Brocco-Rivera was handling a firearm inside the vehicle, and that the firearm was accidentally discharged, fatally striking Mr. Brocco-Rivera while both were seated in the car," police said in a press release on Monday.

Police said investigators have also recovered a handgun that is different from the one officers collected from the scene on Oct. 18. The newly recovered handgun, which was found in a separate location from the park, is believed to have been the one used in the shooting and has been sent for forensic testing, police said.

The Lorain Police Department's Criminal Investigations Bureau began investigating the shooting as a homicide last week. On Friday, the police department said the county prosecutor's office is working with police to determine "which, if any, criminal charges are warranted in this case."
