Описание к видео Corporate Work or Freelance: Which is the best?

Being an indie developer or work for the corporate?

🔹Mindset

First of all, you need to understand who you are. Are you capable of working on your own and managing your schedule, or do you need constant supervision? Will you feel comfortable taking full responsibility for your income, taxation, paperwork, client search, etc., versus having it all sorted out within the organization.

So coming back to the mindset topic. To become a successful freelancer, you will need to unleash your entrepreneurial skills. You will have to find clients and negotiate deals; this means that pay for some projects might be considerably higher than working for a company. Still, the downside here is you never know whether you will find a new client and when will be your next gig. You will constantly need to educate yourself in becoming a better version of yourself. At the same time, it is a normal lifestyle for some people; others might struggle with it.

On the other hand, working for a corporation will give you a stable monthly income and financial security and other advantages of corporate work like health insurance, corporate culture, paid holidays, and training. But on the other hand, you will be glued to your workplace (we are not talking about remote companies now, but a lot can be done from home now). You will have to deal with reports, project stress, and other office life situations.

🔸Finances

Finances is another interesting topic to discuss. Money management is something we will be talking about in future videos. So, let's see about finance in the freelance and corporate world.

As a freelancer, you will need to sell your services, learn how to position yourself for clients and well, find these clients in the first place. It may require some work for a little money, a lot of projects, and many negotiations. Of course, if you are motivated enough and you have a final goal in mind, it will be a fantastic journey. And you can get paid so much more than any corporate job (unless you are C-level in a big corporation).

On the other hand, if negotiations and selling aren't your cups of tea, and you prefer to work on projects aligned to you - corporate is your thing. Developers are in high demand now, and even corporate payouts are way above average in most countries. For example, I know that in Russia, on average, managers are getting around 500EUR per month, while developers are getting not less than 1000 EUR per month. So working for a corporation is a safe way here.

🔹Motivation

Another interesting point. Motivation is the key to success, although you will have a lot of external motivation as a corporate worker: competition with colleagues, performance reports, etc. Your boss will be checking on you, and also you will be bound by the company rules.

As a freelancer, you will need a lot of internal motivation to succeed. As you will need to complete your work fast enough and be available for other projects. No one will be there to control your performance or guide you to the results unless you pay someone to do it ;)

🔸Work-Life balance

As a freelancer, you are your boss, which means you have an opportunity to be responsible for your own time and location. Most of the freelance jobs can be done remotely, so it is your responsibility to choose where to live and work. You need to have strong organizational skills to make sure you don't forget to work and earn money. Sometimes, it's hard, especially if you live with your family and set up healthy work boundaries.

As an employee on the other hand, you are most probably glued to the office. You can be less spontaneous, but on the other hand, if you lack organizational skills, that might be the best for you.

🔹Security

And one of the most challenging parts - security. As a corporate, you have health benefits, social benefits, pension plan, stocks option and so on (of course, differs from country to country and from company to company), but mostly you are more secure as an employee.

As a freelancer, you are responsible for your won saving, insurance, and pension plan.

I think we covered the most important aspects of being an employee slash freelancer. Share in the comments what do you prefer?
