Here are some corrections to “facts” you may have heard or believed ⤵️

Historians estimate that 50,000 (not 9 million) people were executed in Europe and North America during the witch trials from 1427 to 1436.

(With 19 more during the Salem Witch Trials in 1692)

These people who were accused and lost their life for being “witches” were not practicing witchcraft the way we think of it today.

Or likely in any form.

The way many people view modern witchcraft is more aligned with the European herbalists and cunning folk of the medieval era.

But, they are not the people who were accused of witchcraft. In some cases, it was actually the herbalists and cunning folk who helped round up the “witches”.

Those who stood trial and were executed at the time were accused of being agents of the devil, a villain of the Christian religion.

Though, some modern witches do work with Satan.

And some modern witches are Christian.

Additionally, women were not the only ones executed for witchcraft. The majority (about 4/5) certainly was women, however.

Anyone who did not adhere to the cultural norms of the time (the state and the church) had the potential to be accused. This included the elderly, disabled, non-cis, non-straight, non-white, and non-Christian.

Plus, not all modern witches are “daughters”.

Finally, executions in English speaking countries were largely carried out by hanging. Very few “witches” were burned at the stake.

And most of the ones who were, were burned after they were dead (from hanging or beheading).

I’m not saying it wasn’t a terrible stain on human history.

The stain of persecuting witches remains today in countries like Tanzania, Ghana, India, and Papua New Guinea.

The point is, there is a lesson in this history. But, it might not be the lesson many people think it is.
