DPA microphones recently released their new 2012 and 2015 instrument microphones as well as their new drum kit pack DDK4000.

To coincide with the release, we invited professional musician and session drummer Dean Cousins and his drum kit to take full advantage of the mics.

Dean Cousins, like a lot of musicians, started drumming as a child when he first heard ‘Apache’, going on to play for signed bands on tours, play as a session drummer on many records, and having his own successful drum school that has produced many a talented musician over the years. He’s a true gentleman and incredibly humble about his achievements.

For Dean, the best thing about DPA drum mics is the fact he doesn’t see them. “That’s perfect,” he says. He’s not distracted whilst playing or daunted, feeling that he may hit one.

The microphones included in the demo are the 4099’s for toms and snare, the 4055 for the kick drum, the 2012 for the hi-hat and the 2015 stereo pair as overheads. All the DPA mics are condensers enabling them to capture high amounts of detail and being extremely transient.

The set-up is easy with the use of the Microdot to XLR adaptors supplied with them, meaning a simple XLR cable to the desk is all you need. They come with the clips needed for stands or rims and have very handy zip-up cases to keep all accessories safe.

When discussing the microphone reproduction of his drum kit in a studio, or live, Dean is quick to say that as long as he has tuned his kit and it sounds good under his fingers, he leaves the rest to the Sound Engineer and microphones and trusts them 100%.
