第一次聽這首歌是在中學時代，當時沒有互聯網，我只聽旋律，沒有深究歌詞，感覺音調很高，歌手和中段的電子琴很狂野。

這首歌講述一個年輕人，在新奧爾良的一家妓院「The Rising Sun」陷入困境和痛苦的故事。他的母親是個裁縫，父親是個賭徒、酒鬼，年輕人在那裡過著腐敗的生活。他請求天父和母親提醒弟妹，不要重蹈他的覆轍。

當我細看歌詞，便不太喜歡The Animals的演繹。再聽其他版本，如Joan Baez和Brothers Four的演唱，也未能觸動我。最後，我自己編了一個folk-rock版，這首歌原來是三拍的，我由中段的過門音樂開始，由三拍的慢速勾弦改為四拍的中速撥弦，製造特別的氣氛，以帶出：我要乘火車返回故鄉，收拾這像囚犯的鎖鏈和鐵球束縛般沉重的爛攤子（wear my ball and chain）。
