DESCRIPTION: This Seminar theorizes and designs the library of the future—an infinite archive encompassing books that have never been written, might be written, or can never be written. Drawing inspiration from mythological, imaginary, and long-lost libraries, participants will explore both the spatial and conceptual architectures that could define the libraries at the edges of knowledge and imagination. The Seminar will encourage creative experimentation, inviting participants to imagine new blueprints and catalogues for hypothetical libraries found at the end of time and the boundaries of the universe. Through critical readings and original design exercises, the Seminar becomes a laboratory for inventing, narrating, and documenting the possible futures of the library as both a real and imagined institution.
Session 1, The Book of Echoes: We explore legendary lost libraries—such as the House of Wisdom, the Library of Alexandria, and mythic or literary spaces like Borges’s “Library of Babel,” the Hermetic Hall of Records, and Murakami’s “The Strange Library”—to consider how memory, erasure, and speculation have shaped the idea of the archive.
Readings: Jorge Luis Borges, “The Library of Babel”, Selections from Hermetic texts on the Hall of Records, Haruki Murakami, “The Strange Library”
Session 2, The Book of Fatal Images: This Session investigates the architecture, atmosphere, and spatial logic of imaginary libraries, considering designs that are labyrinthine, subterranean, or cosmological.
Readings: Umberto Eco, The Name of the Rose (selections), Carlos Ruiz Zafón, The Shadow of the Wind (selections), Erin Morgenstern, The Starless Sea (selections)
Session 3, The Book of the Stranger: We study histories and legends of anonymous, banned, and rumored books, using these as the basis for constructing speculative catalogues and organizing systems for the future library.
Readings: Mike Carey & Peter Gross, The Unwritten (comic selections), Lev Grossman, The Magicians (selections), Cornelia Funke, Inkheart (selections)
Session 4, The Book of the Giant: This final Session examines the psychological, existential, and transformative effects that imagined libraries and their texts can have on readers, authors, and societies.
Readings: Scott Hawkins, The Library at Mount Char (selections), Isaac Asimov, Foundation (“The Great Library” chapters), H. P. Lovecraft, The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath (selections)
For their creative or critical library projects, participants may wish to draw inspiration from works such as Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose, Carlos Ruiz Zafón’s The Shadow of the Wind, Erin Morgenstern’s The Starless Sea, Lev Grossman’s The Magicians, Mike Carey and Peter Gross’s The Unwritten, Cornelia Funke’s Inkheart, Scott Hawkins’s The Library at Mount Char, Isaac Asimov’s Foundation, H. P. Lovecraft’s The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, Philip K. Dick’s Ubik, Roald Dahl’s Matilda, J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series (particularly the Restricted Section), Django Wexler’s The Forbidden Library, Matt Haig’s The Midnight Library, Elizabeth Kostova’s The Historian, Walter Moers’s The City of Dreaming Books, Haruki Murakami’s Kafka on the Shore and Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, and Youssef Ziedan’s Azazeel, among others.
