The National Day of UAE is celebrated on December 2 every year that marks the day when emirates united together at Union House to form the United Arab Emirates in 1971. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was the first president of UAE. Celebrations are held across the country on UAE national day holiday. Fireworks, dance shows, and car rallies are some of the most common activities that people enjoy on this holiday. Air shows are conducted and military parades are held at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre on UAE holiday.

In December 1971, the rulers of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Al-Ain, Ajman, Sharjah, & Umm al-Quwain decided to unite and laid down the idea of UAE. Later in February 1972, Ras Al Khaimah decided to join them and become a single unit. The idea of united settlement in UAE began after the British declared their desire to withdraw from colonies of the eastern Mediterranean. A meeting was held between Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Makhtoum and they decided to unite. They also invited the other Gulf Emirates to come together for the union. After the British left in 1968, the National Day celebrations started three years later in 1971. When the Emirates Federal Constitution approved the principle on Dec 1, 1971. And the very next day, the seventh emirate decided to join in as well. Therefore, each year, 2nd December marks the celebration of the National day of UAE.
